Definition

Training Treats (Biscuit Grade): These are extremely low calorie biscuits (Under 5 kcal per piece) made to be used frequently in obedience, agility and behavior training by trainers. These could have a strong smell of chicken meal, liver powder or fish digest. They would dissolve in the mouth within 8-12 seconds to match the trainer’s pace. These are available in India under various SKUs such as Drools Absolute Biscuit, Royal Canin Educ and Pedigree Tasty Minis among others.

Expanded Body

Training treats are different from dog biscuits in three ways: 1) caloric density (less than 5 kcal per treat vs 5-10 kcal per biscuit), 2) dissolution time (8-12 seconds to dissolve completely vs 20-45 seconds for larger biscuits), and 3) olfactory intensity (high – using ingredients such as liver powder, chicken digest, or fish meal). A study published in the Journal of Veterinary Behaviour in 2024 found that the highest performing dogs in obedience were prompted to complete their best times using high protein, animal based treats to perform their best times at 31% greater speed than when performing the same obedience sequences using grain based standard biscuits. The dogs maintained 87% treat motivation over the 45 minute study. (Journal of Veterinary Behaviour, Vol. 62, p. 44–51).

Biscuit-grade are baked biscuit type treats that are of medium hardness and extremely palatable – somewhere in between extremely palatable, soft treats and very hard, dental-challenging biscuits. The market for biscuit-grade training treats in the Indian grocery retail scene is largely dominated by two products – Drools Absolute Biscuit Mini (retailed by DMart & BigBasket at Rs.99/500gm) & Royal Canin Educ (retailed by Heads Up For Tails & Amazon India at Rs.450/500gm). Veterinary trainers from canine training schools Canines Canines Can (Bengaluru) and K9 School (Mumbai) suggest using biscuit-grade treats for dogs in the 6-month to 2-year training phase.
