Expanded Body
The FSSAI Standard 2.2.10 for processed animal food was published in the Gazette of India (Extraordinary, Part II, Section 3, Sub-section i) on January 10, 2021. This is India’s first comprehensive standard for processed animal food, such as dog biscuits, dog food, cat food, and other formats of pet foods. Until this Standard was framed, processed animal food, intended to be fed to pets as well as other animals, was governed by the general food safety rules and regulations of India, without any consideration for the nutritional requirements of different species of animals.
FSSAI specifications for dog biscuits under Standard 2.2.10 (Animal and Plant Derivatives in Food Packaged in Unit Packaging) as applicable are: (a) Minimum 16% crude protein on dry matter basis; (b) Maximum 8% moisture; (c) 5% maximum by weight crude fiber; (d) Melamine free; (e) Aflatoxin 10ppb max; and (f) Salmonella negative in 25g sample. The FSSAI license number to be printed on front of the pack. The 14 digit license number starts with the state code of the manufacturer. One can verify any dog biscuit brand’s FSSAI certification at Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) portal foscos.fssai.gov.in. As on Q1 2026, there are 14 dog biscuit manufacturers holding valid FSSAI Category 2.2 licenses in India.
